The Antonio Mattei factory has been operating since 1858 and run by the same family since 1904, making super-simple biscuit cookies with only wheat flour, sugar, free-range eggs, almonds, and pine nuts. They're delicious enough that we've been stocking up on every trip to Italy for years. This variety is a relatively recent creation that's made with the same dough as the originals, just with pistachios added to the mix. Dip in coffee, break out a bag for snack hour in the office, serve for a fun holiday breakfast, eat for dessert. (AM recommends pairing with smooth grappas, spiced gin, dessert wines, and even ice cream.) And they come in a beautiful, iconic bright blue bag — when we say 'iconic' we mean that Blu Mattei is a registered and trademarked color — so they make a great host gift.
