This face mask has been hand-embroidered with traditional Matyo motifs of Hungarian folk art, by a very talented third generation embroiderer in the countryside, just outside of Budapest, who has won numerous competitions for her fine and delicate embroidery skill. The traditional embroidery, known as 'Maytó embroidery', is a free-hand embroidery technique in which women sketched and embroidered various floral motifs of their gardens into their clothing. Whilst the Matyó embroidery was at its height in 1800s, it has rapidly diminished by the 20th century. Matyó embroidery has been included on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage.
