Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853–1890) considered oleanders joyous, life-affirming flowers — in this summer painting, Oleanders ( 1888), they fill a majolica jug that the artist used for other still lifes made in Arles. They are symbolically juxtaposed with Émile Zola's La joie de vivre , a novel Vincent van Gogh placed in contrast to an open Bible in an 1885 Nuenen still life. As part of its mission to bring art to life, The Metropolitan Museum of Art invited Todd to design a series of wearable works of art.
