This book was published on the occasion of Jean-Michel Basquiat: Made on Market Street at Gagosian, Beverly Hills, the first-ever exhibition focused exclusively on works that the artist produced in Los Angeles. Basquiat frequented Southern California from November 1982 through May 1984, working in Venice to develop approximately a hundred paintings, numerous works on paper, and six silkscreen editions. Curated by Fred Hoffman with Larry Gagosian, Made on Market Street revisits this pivotal era, bringing nearly thirty works together, including some of his most important paintings.
