The Pinctada maxima oyster is one of the largest and rarest pearl oysters in the world producing the famous South Sea pearl. Lined with nacre, the same natural composite that forms each pearl, the inside of the shell has a pearlescent and lustrous white finish know as Mother of Pearl. Mother of pearl has throughout history had many applications, meanings and symbolism. To this day it continues to be sought after for jewellery and fashion accessories, homewares, buttons, arts and culture. Each oyster will generally produce several pearls during it's lifetime before being harvested for it's meat and mother of pearl shell, ensuring no part of the oyster is wasted.
