Dr. John Thomas Romney Robinson ( 1792 - 1882), was an astronomer and physicist. He was the longtime director of the Armagh Astronomical Observatory, one of the chief astronomical observatories in the UK during the 19th century. Asked by Nevil Maskelyne – the Astronomer Royal, to produce a clock. It was at the new Armagh Observatory where Earnshaw installed one his groundbreaking clocks incorporating his new design of escapement and an air-tight case to reduce dust and draughts. The clock was installed in 1791. Upon installation, Robinson believed it to be the most accurate clock of its kind in the world.
