Afa is an upcycled vintage leather triangle bag reimagined with black and blue merino wool and metal accents, in collaboration with visual artist Chisara Vidale . It's a roomy shoulder bag with optional interior snaps that allows it to hold a contemporary triangle shape or when unsecured, become a roomy tote bag. It is made from relaxed patent leather, with a subtle sheen. Working alongside Chisara, we transformed this vintage bag into one of our signature pieces of wearable art. We replaced portions of the bag with felted and stitched merino wool, backed by robust recycled cotton canvas. We made two piercings into the side of the bag with metal eyelets, which were accented by hanging streaks of merino wool. The bag was then relined with organic bamboo silk. Afa follows the theme of our Moroccan-inspired Raha collection, which explores expressions of coziness and intimacy in a warm climate. Inspired by Berber wool artistry, we transformed this vintage bag into a tactile 'comfort creature', which sits snugly under the arm. Afa means 'fire' in Berber. Each bag from this series is one-of-a-kind, with only five made. They're signed by Chisara, and identified by an edition number. Upcycled in London. Sustainability Upcycling is one of the best solutions to combating fashion's waste problem. By definition, it's the process of adding value to something that previously held little. Rather than sourcing virgin leather and making brand-new bags, we sought to transform existing vintage bags into something of higher value and sentiment to a consumer - a functional work of art. The bags were lined with organic bamboo silk, and fortified with 100% recycled cotton canvas, sourced from recycled cotton shirts. All wool used is natural merino wool. After removing the shipping labels, your mailer will decompose after six months in a household compost, or after three months in a commercial compost, leaving no harmful residues behind.
